The City of Wyoming is inviting residents, local businesses and community organizations to help spruce up local parks in celebration of Earth Day during a special event Thursday, April 22.

During the Spring Spruce Up event – set for 9:30 a.m. to noon – community members can take pride in beautifying some of Wyoming’s 700 acres of parkland and green spaces. The event will focus on litter cleanup, small painting projects and other tasks at Pinery Park, 2301 De Hoop Ave. SW, and Lamar Park, 2561 Porter St. SW.

All volunteers will be provided free disposable gloves and all the supplies needed to participate in Spruce Up activities. Volunteers and staff will be required to follow COVID-19 and general safety precautions, including face coverings and physical distancing.

“When the community comes together, much can be accomplished,” said Rebecca Rynbrandt, director of community services. “Since the pandemic began, we have seen a dramatic increase in community members using our parks, which are safe places for many to get outdoors, enjoy nature and stay healthy. The Spring Spruce Up event is a great way to celebrate our parks and give back through service alongside friends, family and coworkers.”

Each year, the Parks and Recreation service unit of the City’s Community Services Department creates opportunities for the community to connect to the parks system. Volunteers help enhance and preserve Wyoming’s nature preserves, playgrounds and nature trails. This work promotes community health and wellness as well as provides safe play environments for children.

The Parks and Recreation service unit also has an Adopt-A-Park program that offers 21 adoptable parks. Volunteers in this program collaborate with Parks and Recreation staff on one-time or ongoing service projects such as litter cleanup, flower plantings, garden maintenance and other activities. Groups or individuals who make a yearlong commitment are recognized for their commitment and community impact on a sign in the park where their efforts take place.
