Prairie Parkway 2026 Project

Reconstruction, Road Diet and Watermain Replacement

About the Project

The City of Wyoming is embarking on a construction project on Wentworth Dr. to Byron Center Ave. This project will upgrade aging infrastructure and improve traffic flow in the area. Funding for the project includes a 2-million-dollar FHWA grant, with the remainder being paid with City funds.

Project Details
  • Construct a new 12-inch diameter watermain from Wentworth Dr. to Byron Center Ave.
  • Rebuild the street with a 3-lane cross section.
  • Replace the sidewalk with a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the south side

Why is this Project Necessary?

This project will replace the cast-iron watermain in Prairie, which was built in the 1960s, has experienced several breaks, and has reached the end of its useful life.

The pavement cross-section, which was constructed in the 1970s, has reached the end of its life and is also due for a reconstruction. To further improve safety for drivers and pedestrians and reduce speed, the existing 4-lane road will be converted into a 3-lane road, also known as a road diet. Traffic studies show that a 3-lane section is adequate for the traffic volume on Prairie.

Additionally, the new pathway will connect Kent Trails to the new City Center pedestrian bridge. This will create a non-motorized pathway stretching from the western City Limits at Wentworth Dr to the eastern City Limits at Clyde Park.

What is the Project Schedule?

This project is expected to begin in July 2026 and is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2027.

This project will be constructed in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Michael Ave. to Burlingame Ave. – July through August 2026
  • Phase 2: Byron Center Ave. to Wentworth Dr. – July through November 2026
  • Phase 3: Burlingame Ave. to Byron Center Ave. – Spring 2027

How will Traffic and Access to Property be Affected?

Throughout the construction of this project, Prairie Parkway will be closed to through traffic but open to local traffic; through traffic on Prairie will be detoured to 28th Street.

Short-term point closures will be needed when connecting the watermain to the side streets. During these closures, all properties will have access, but may only be from one direction (i.e., access only from the east or west).

Road closure and detour signs will be posted once construction begins. To find more information and weekly updates, visit the construction updates page.
