Wyoming Employee Community Outreach - WECO

Wyoming Employees Community Outreach

The Wyoming Employees Community Outreach (WECO) is a non-profit organization focused on providing temporary assistance to children who live in Wyoming. Our goal is to help 10 or more children a month at a cost of approximately $75 per child. Major funding for the outreach is raised through voluntary donations primarily from City of Wyoming employees.

The idea for this outreach program started shortly after the tragedy on September 11, 2001. Those events touched the heart of Paul Turner, an employee who became determined to do something locally to help children in our community. With the help of like-minded coworkers, the program started taking shape. After additional employees joined the cause, a board of current, retired, and former City employees was established and the non-profit status was achieved. In September of 2003, City employees started donating a portion of their paychecks to WECO and the outreach was officially in motion.

Since October of 2003, over 990 families have been assisted with WECO pledges totaling more than $160,000.00, benefiting over 2300 children living in Wyoming. Paul's dream has become a reality!

To receive assistance, an application must be submitted and signed by a referral person or organization on behalf of a Wyoming family. The WECO Board approves applications after verification of the information submitted. Once approved, a purchase order is issued to the Wyoming Target store to assist families in making purchases of clothing items, footwear, outerwear, and school necessities.

WECO is a great example of City employees, along with other contributors, working together to help needy families that live in our community.

If someone you know would benefit from this outreach, you can download the WECO Application, e-mail WECO@wyomingmi.gov, or you can contact Traci Shaffer at 261-3582.

The City of Wyoming is proud to know that City Employees have been "Making a Difference in a Child’s Life!" since 2003.
