Burton Street 2026 Construction

Reconstruction, Road Diet and Watermain Replacement

About the Project

The City of Wyoming is embarking on a construction project on Burton Street from Burlingame Avenue to Clyde Park Avenue. This project will upgrade aging infrastructure and improve traffic flow in the area.

Funding for the project includes Street Funds received through ACT51, and Capital Improvement funds received through the Capital Improvement Millage.

Project Details
  • Construct a new 12-inch-diameter watermain in Burton Street.
  • Construct a new 8-inch watermain in Osmer Avenue and resurface the street.
    • This project is adjacent to Burton and has been combined with the Burton project for efficiency.
  • Rebuild the street with a 3-lane cross section, also known as a road diet
  • Add a 10-foot-wide shared-use path on the south side.
  • Modify the Burton, Burlingame, Beverly, Lee intersection to a standard 4 leg intersection.

Why is this Project Necessary?

This project will replace the cast iron watermains in Burton and Osmer, which were built in the 1940s and since then have experienced several breaks, signifying the end of their useful life.

The pavement cross-section, which was constructed in the 1970s, is also due for reconstruction. To further improve safety for drivers and pedestrians, the existing 4-lane road will be converted into a 3-lane road, also known as a road diet. Traffic studies show that a 3-lane section is adequate for the traffic volume on Burton and will help calm traffic and reduce speeding in this area.

Additionally, modifying the intersection of Burton, Burlingame, Beverly, and Lee to a standard 4-leg intersection is necessary to reduce confusion and help with navigation.

What is the Project Schedule?

The project is expected to begin in April 2026 and is anticipated to be completed by November 2026.

This project will be constructed in 2 phases:

  • Phase 1: Clyde Park to Godfrey – May through August
  • Phase 2: Godfrey to Burlingame - August through November

How will Traffic and Access to Property be Affected?

Throughout the construction of this project, Burton Street and Osmer Avenue will be closed to through traffic, but open to local traffic. Through traffic on Burton will be detoured to Chicago Drive, but Osmer will not have a marked detour.

As the watermain is installed and connected to side streets, motorists should expect short-term point closures.

To effectively maintain traffic flow, local traffic access to properties will be maintained; however, traffic may be limited to one direction (i.e., access only from the east or west).

Road closure and detour signs will be posted once construction begins. To find more information and weekly updates, visit the construction updates page.
