The Wyoming Department of Public Safety is currently accepting applications to establish a list for future police officer openings. Police Officers with the Wyoming Department of Public Safety are NOT cross-trained and are NOT required to possess firefighting or MFR qualifications.

To be considered for this position, candidates with an associate degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field are preferred.  Candidates should be Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certifiable and have reasonable knowledge of local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and ordinances.  Candidates with lesser qualifications and experience, and who have or have not started the police academy are strongly encouraged to apply and may be hired into the Police Recruit position until able to obtain the appropriate licensure.  

The position of police officer includes a generous benefits package including an employer-paid defined contribution plan (8%) and post-employment health plan (4%), a comprehensive health insurance plan, dental and vision insurance plans, life insurance, paid vacation and sick time and paid holidays, tuition reimbursement, longevity pay, on-duty wellness program, and free access to an employee assistance program. Special Assignments include K-9, Detective, Tactical Unit, Honor Guard, Crisis Negotiation Unit, Motor Unit, Community Services, School Resource Officer, Kent Area Narcotics Team, and Tactical Bike Unit (mobile field force team).

The position of police recruit is for candidates who aspire to become full-time police officers with the City of Wyoming.  The position includes police academy sponsorship, competitive pay while in the police academy, and the intent to be hired as a full-time police officer upon successful completion of the academy and licensing by MCOLES.  The City of Wyoming Department of Public Safety – Police Division will sponsor candidates through the MCOLES Public Safety Academy Assistance Program.

Police Officer: $32.41 – $38.95/hour

Police Recruit: $25.00/hour
