The City of Wyoming is seeking a part-time magistrate to serve the 62A District Court with integrity, sound judgement and a strong commitment to fairness and impartiality.

This role supports the appointed judges and serves the residents of the community by applying law consistently, upholding ethical standards, and ensuring due process in all proceedings.

Within the authorized court rule, statues, and the chief judge, this position will: 

  • Conduct informal civil infraction matters
  • Preside over small claims hearings
  • Conduct arraignments in felony and misdemeanor matters
  • Accept and examine affidavits for search and seizure warrants and issue warrants based on probable cause
  • Set or deny bail in criminal matters based on seriousness of charge
  • Perform civil marriage ceremonies
  • Serve in a rotational on-call capacity after hours for issuance of warrants and setting bonds
  • Perform related work as required

The ideal candidate demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and the ability to make timely, well-reasoned decisions in a public service environment. 

Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, or a field related to the work and two years of experience in a court setting is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the education requirement. Licensed attorney in  good standing with the State Bar of Michigan is required for the attorney magistrate position.

Eligible candidates must be a City of Wyoming registered voter and successfully complete the Michigan Judicial Institute training course on traffic law adjudication and sanctions.

This position is scheduled to work an average of 20 hours per work and is not eligible for employer-sponsored benefits. Sick leave will accrue in accordance with the Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA).

Non-attorney Magistrate hourly wage: $45/hour

Attorney Magistrate hourly wage: $55/hour
